Lighting Up the Statistics

Lighting Up the Statistics Lighting Up the Statistics Lighting Up the StatisticsE-cigarettes have become an item some turn to when they want to stop smoking traditional cigarettes, while some even take them up instead of the traditional cigarette from the very beginning. As its users have grown worldwide, a team that includes the Rochester Institute of Technology is testing the effects of e-cigarettes, with particular attention given to the flavoring.Prof. Risa Robinson, head of the mechanical engineering program at the school and director of the Respiratory Technologies Laboratory, has been studying e-cigarettes for years, with her initial research including article deposition in the respiratory tract. There are a decent amount of potential factors with e-cigarettes, but two that arent considered enough are the coiling and that the flavoring might make people use e-cigarettes more often. An e-cigarette works through a heating coil and in a liquid format there is the nicotine. They t ake a puff and bring liquid into an atomization chamber and a chamber has a heating coil and that process aerosolizes the liquid into a small droplet. The droplet is suspended in air. And thats what is inhaled. One of the monitors for their analysis is an orifice plate with a technique to measure flow rate. The plate is a flow channel that has an abrupt constriction in the flow, she says. Because of that, it has a pressure drop and can derive empirically a relationship between flowing rate and that measure and that pressure drop. If you have a couple of pressure sensors in there you can measure the pressure drop across that orifice plate and have to calibrate it to associate with the actual pressure drop. We can essentially measure flow rate. There is a data logger so we know how many puffs, how long a puff lasted, and when they took the puff. With integral calculus, we can figure out total cumulative amount inhaled.Prof. Risa Robinson uses e-cigarettes with built-in internal sensors to determine the total exposure a smoker would have under different scenarios. Image A. Sue Weisler / RITThey are looking at the impact of cigarette design itself on emissions, some having multiple coils, for example. They also have different aspects to their atomizer, she says. We want to know how much nicotine they are getting in a week compared to regular, conventional cigarettes. If they use this one flavor for a couple of weeks, does their usage increase or decrease? Were looking at emissions and whats in the emissions. They even can do a mechanical puffing of the cigarette and can see through this what kind of carcinogens and toxins are present, she says.Their hypotheses when it comes to flavor? One studys conclusion was that flavor will impact usage behavior from cumulative exposure, another studys is that certain flavors will create more toxic emissions than others, she says.Just because it may not be harmful to use this flavoring in a cookie doesnt mean it works the same wa y for e-cigarettes. Its going into your body in a different way, she says. Some studies have shown when running flavorings over coils that there are toxins produced that are harmful for human cells. We dont have information now on which flavorings are more harmful, she says.Robinson has been pushed by a search for truth. What people sometimes dont think about is they can possibly end up with huge potential problems down the road by not considering whats going in their body, she says. Its our job to search for answers to sometimes tough questions.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion We want to know how much nicotine they are getting in a week compared to regular, conventional cigarettes. If they use this one flavor for a couple of weeks, does their usage increase or decrease?Prof. Risa Robinson, Rochester Institute of Technology

3 Life-Changing Career Lessons From Great Books - The Muse

3 Life-Changing Career Lessons From Great Books - The Muse 3 Life-Changing Career Lessons From Great Books A great book isn’t just a fun way to pass the time. The best books offer truths that you can carry into your life- and yes, into your work life, too. That’s because career lessons don’t have to come from business tomes or self-help titles. They can be found in anything from a thriller to a memoir, if you know where to look. And who better to recommend a few great reads (or listens!) than the folks who work every day to bring stories to life? We asked three Audible employees to share the books that taught them key lessons for their careers- and how they apply these insights every day. The Power of Pursuing Your Passion The books: Rowing the Atlantic: Lessons Learned on the Open Ocean by Roz Savage The Whip by Karen Kondazian Rage Against the Dying by Becky Masterman Chosen by: Beth Anderson, EVP and Publisher Why did you choose these books? These three audiobooks introduce the listener to three different women- actual and fictional- who defy popular expectations to achieve their own goals. By rowing solo across oceans, Roz Savage demonstrates the power of a woman in a battle against the elements and the limits of physical endurance. In the novel The Whip, Charley Parkhurst disregards societal norms of the 1800s by assuming the identity of a man in order to have the life and career she wants. Brigid Quinn in the thriller Rage Against the Dying faces down assumptions about both her age and her gender in her work as an FBI agent tracking down a killer. The message of all three is that if you are passionate about achieving a goal or pursuing a career, don’t let societal norms, popular expectations, or narrow-minded prejudices get in your way. What I like about all of these stories is that they all feature strong women who are getting the job done. Beth Anderson, EVP and Publisher How can you apply lessons from these books at work? Find your passion or your goal and pursue it. You may be lucky enough to have a support team around you as Roz Savage did. Or you may have to prove yourself before you find that support structure. What is your best advice for being a strong woman at work? Be smart; work hard; collaborate with colleagues; find satisfaction or even joy in what you’re doing. Backing Down Isn’t an Option The book: Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office: Unconscious Mistakes Women Make That Sabotage Their Careers by Lois P. Frankel, PhD Chosen by: Kalpana Banerjee, Senior Director, Product Management Why did you choose this book? This book gives over 130 mistakes women could be making in our careers that could be sabotaging them, and tips for how we could be doing better. I liked many of the tips...but if I were to call one out, I would say “being overly concerned with offending others” was a good one. What did it teach you? If you hesitate to clearly express your point of view or back down from a conflict because you want to be liked or you don’t want to ruffle feathers or offend someone, you have not used an opportunity to express your true point of view. And if you do this often enough, you are sure to be overlooked for your opinion since you never have a differing point of view or challenge the status quo. Speak up for what you want and ask for the things that you need and that matter to you. Kalpana Banerjee, Senior Director, Product Management How do you use this advice when you face conflict at work? I personally have tried to bring in objectivity to a conflict. If someone acts offended by a legitimate request or concern that I have raised, then that does not mean I back down. Clearly it is a concern that bothered me, or else I would not have raised it, so I try to present it in a different vein. I try not to apologize for someone else’s bad reaction but go into problem-solving mode in an attempt to identify the real source of the disconnect so we can address it objectively. I can assure you that this is a continuous learning experience- I need to remind myself to do this daily. I encourage my team to challenge an opinion by offering a diverse point of view. This diverse thinking can only help the team collectively grow and expand our thinking towards better, creative outcomes. Find Strength in Your Authentic Voice The book: Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life by Anne Lamott Chosen by: Kari Niles, Senior Creative Director, Brand Why did you choose this book? Bird by Bird is a book about the author’s experience as a writer. The way Anne expresses it is using your authentic voice and really digging deep. I began my career in creative at a digital agency, when the internet was in its nascent stage. Most of the senior creatives were from a design background and were male. I am neither. As a writer, and as a female, in order to stand out and add value I had to be true to who I was and share my story. Not “personalize” the work necessarily, but feel confident that not only is my voice valid in the room, but it’s necessary. How did using your authentic voice help you in your career? Under-representation is often one of the biggest (and least recognized) challenges to marketing agencies; meaning, without female voices in the room, how do you market to women? I used my authentic voice to add value for clients, and that in turn was recognized by the agency management team. Being true to me got me ahead. What is your advice for people searching for their authentic voice? My authentic voice is not always right. In fact, it’s often wrong. I bet yours is, too. So in order to follow your gut and be true to your voice, you must be open to feedback. Above all, listen carefully to how your ideas and opinions are received. Read between the lines. Listen for the pauses and hiccups and quiet nodding heads. That will help you better understand what it is you’re putting forth in the world, its worth or lack thereof, its acceptance or resistance. Listening and being observant will help you navigate your own voice toward success. Kari Niles, Senior Creative Director, Brand What would you recommend someone do if they want to be more authentic at work? Empathy is under-rated in the workplace. If you want to bring “the whole you” to the workplace, if you want that to be recognized and acknowledged, you need to be ready to give that in return. Ask about others’ ideas, where they come from, what informs them. Care about what the heck gets them out of bed in the morning. Be a human, and others will give you permission to be a human, too.

On why your disagreeable employee is a strong hire

On why your disagreeable employee is a strong hire On why your disagreeable employee is a strong hire When you have an employee who questions your decisions, you can choose to see them as a negative grump, or you can follow the advice of famed organizational psychologist Adam Grant and generously reframe their perspective as one coming from a “disagreeable giver.”This is the recent advice Grant gave a reader named Fortuna about their question, “Do you think you should hire only or mainly people who are aligned with your purpose?”Grant’s response? Not every hire should be a skeptic about your mission, but it behooves you to hire some of them. “Hire too many people who are passionate about your mission, and you’ll end up more vulnerable to groupthink and tunnel vision, and more resistant to change. You get zealots and evangelists with blind faith in your purpose, who never question the side effects and unintended consequences,” he cautioned. Why being disagreeable at work is a good trait to haveGrant is suggesting that being disagreeable at work means that you are an ind ependent thinker who will not follow the status quo. Disagreeable employees are likely to be the employees who are going to spot problems before a people-pleaser will. They may be more willing to sacrifice likability with doing the right thing.“Every workplace needs at least a handful of people who aren’t committed to the organization’s mission. They’re the ones we can count on to anticipate the harm the mission might do- and take action to prevent it,” Grant wrote. He cited the tobacco company Philip Morris as a company that could have been helped by disagreeable givers helping the company make the pivot to a “smoke-free future” sooner. Why being disagreeable is still a riskOne word of caution before you start challenging your manager to a dual to show your commitment to integrity: there is still a risk of being seen as disagreeable. One reason why more employees are not disagreeable givers, even if their thoughts are one big question about the company’s mission, is that it can look good if your boss thinks about organizational psychology, but it can also backfire based on who you are. One 2012  study found that being disagreeable helped men get seen as a “tough negotiator” at work, while women who did the same behavior in the office were seen as “control freaks,” as lead author Timothy Judge, put it.Until the advantages of being disagreeable are distributed more fairly and are recognized by more open-minded managers, proceed with caution, disagreeable naysayers. The world is still catching up to the important value your criticisms bring to the meeting.

3 Company Research Strategies for Your Next Job Interview

3 Company Research Strategies for Your Next Job Interview 3 Company Research Strategies for Your Next Job Interview While some of the population loves research â€" after all, more than 10,000 monthly searches on Simply Hired are for research-based jobs â€" many of you don’t want to do research for a living. But when you have a looming interview, research is an important part of the process that you simply cannot skip. Unfortunately, the discomfort rarely ends with the research itself. You have to figure out what information is worth mentioning and what you can discard, and then you have to find a way to work a bunch of facts into the interview without sounding like a robot. Is an interviewer really going to be impressed that you know the company’s revenue last year, what year it was founded or that you can rattle off the names of each product the company offers? Probably not. So it’s up to you to distinguish what’s important and how to share it in your upcoming interview. Here are three things you need to research about a prospective company and how to use that information in a meaningful way. Company Information Start your research with the largest common denominator: the business itself. But instead of pulling up historical facts about the companys founding or its most recent company retreat, focus on how details about the company create a connection with your own interests and purpose. Question to Ask: How does the company help its customers? It might be easy to identify what products and services a company provides, but you need to dig deeper. How does the company help its customers? What value does it provide and what problem does it solve? For example, Simply Hired helps connect job seekers with jobs they love and employers with fantastic candidates. A technology company might create widgets that help other companies create faster widgets that are embedded in larger widgets down the road. Understanding how the larger picture works is far more insightful than listing off products and services. How to Use It: Align your purpose with the company’s purpose Based on the two examples above, use the research you find to align your purpose with the companys purpose. For example, as someone who has looked for a job and/or had to hire someone, you might understand how hard it can be and want to help others in the same situation by working at Simply Hired. Or you might want to be a part of the technology company because you’re someone who loves driving efficiency and you’re enthusiastic to work for a company that helps technology move faster and with more power. Question to Ask:  What is unique or interesting about the company? The answer here could be wide open, so be on the lookout for tidbits that jump out at you. For example, if the company has won several awards or achieved some sort of milestone it might be the result of a specific campaign or strategy that you could ask about. Or if a company offers perks like a Ping-Pong table or other onsite bonding opportunities it might reveal a personal interest on behalf of senior leadership or human resources. How to Use It: Express your interest in being a part of a unique company Use the companys achievements and notable information to show your interest in being unique. For example, you might want to contribute to a company that is becoming wildly successful as evidenced by the number of awards the company has won. You also might appreciate companies that make an effort to foster relationships between employees. If you find that a foundation of friendship helps your cross-functional performance, you might make a great cultural fit for the company with the Ping-Pong table. Job Information For the next phase of your research, carefully evaluate the job description to pick up on subtle details that you can use to your advantage in the interview. Question to Ask: What language does the job description use to talk about the job? Does the job description emphasize a list of required skills or the fun company culture? Does it ask for a degree in a specific field or any degree/equivalent experience? Evaluate how the job description lays out the opportunity and make a list of words that are repeated often. How to Use It: Use the same or similar terms as you talk about your experience Take these words as cues for what the company and hiring manager value. For example, emphasize your strict adherence to experience and education to a hiring manager who values it, but highlight your ability to work with teams and your transferable skills for other managers. Question to Ask: What jobs are related to this job? Consider the other jobs that have a relationship with this job. For example, as a copywriter you would work with editors, project managers and marketing consultants.  Make a list of the responsibilities and pain points that come with these related jobs. How to Use It: Consider the position from the perspective of these other job titles The purpose of the interview is to figure out your fit for the job. What better way to show your understanding than speaking to the perspective and needs of those who interact with this position? By touching on the interests of related titles, you can easily  navigate questions that come up in the interview. For example, if the interviewer asks about your weaknesses as a copywriter, you can address them within the context of how frustrating a writer’s bad grammar might be for the editor he or she works with. Then you can share trouble you have had with grammar and the steps you took to correct your weakness such as reading grammar books or taking a short grammar course. Interviewer Information Up to this point you’ve kept your attention on the company and the job at hand. However, the person you will be interviewing with is just as important as those first two factors. Who you interview with will decide the chemistry of the interview itself and provide deep insight into how the company operates. Question to Ask: Who will you interview with and what are their current titles? Understand as much about your interviewer as possible, including name, current title and photo. What was the career path the hiring manager took to get to where she is today? How long has she been with the company? No detail is too small. How to Use It: Adjust your use of jargon as needed Knowing who your interviewer is will help you tweak your interview answers for the right audience. For example, if you are interviewing for an engineering job, you’ll want to know if the human resources manager you’re interviewing with has a background in engineering. If they do, you may rely heavily on industry terms for those in your field. But if they do not, you’ll need to explain your experience more generally. The same goes for how you present your experience on your resume. If the interviewer has had several disparate roles or careers, she’ll likely value transferable skills. If she specialized in one specific job, she might value really getting to know how something works and driving results as the industry changes. Why waste your time on pointless research for your next job interview? Focus your efforts on digging up information that will help you communicate your fit for the position, and then present it in that light.

Stressing over the perfect Valentines Day plan Try this fun online quiz

Stressing over the perfect Valentine's Day plan Try this fun online quiz Stressing over the perfect Valentine's Day plan Try this fun online quiz Valentine’s Day is supposed to be one of the most romantic holidays of the year. But oftentimes, it can get bogged down by those pesky details - where are you going, and what are you doing? The pressure is on to come up with that ideal Valentine’s Day date, and all the stress can put a real damper on what’s supposed to be a perfect, romantic evening. That tension becomes even more stifling in a city with so many options. Do you want to see a movie, or go to a play? Is a museum visit the right mood, or a carriage ride? And most importantly, out of the bajillions of restaurants in your area, which one sets the ideal tone for your special someone? But never fear - the Internet is here to save the day! OpenTable has launched a new online tool called Matchmaker that helps you find a restaurant for your big night out, so you can focus on flowers and chocolates. Just answer a few questions, and your Valentine’s Day is basically planned for you.How it worksWhen you launch OpenTable†™s Matchmaker, the first screen includes a cuddly couple with a heart dangling above. But don’t be fooled - the tool isn’t just for lovebirds. Press “get started” and choose from three totally different options: “It’s a date,” “I’m bringing the family” and “celebrating with friends.”Next, Matchmaker gets into the practicalities. Are you looking for a cheaper option, or “going all out?” Do you want Italian, American, Japanese, French, vegetarian, seafood, Mexican or a steakhouse? What’s your vibe - quiet and cozy, formal and fancy, casual and low key or something else? For each category with a myriad of options, you can choose more than one and see what the matchmaker picks for you. Then, it’s time to schedule a date. Are you celebrating on Valentine’s Day proper? Or that weekend? It is a long weekend, after all, which means more time off to be romantic. Maybe you even want to make two reservations!Either way, once you’ve decided on all your param eters, it’s time to meet your match. Say hello to the restaurant of your Valentine’s Day dreams …… Or not.   When I first tried the tool, I happened to get a restaurant I’ve been to several times, that’s not among my favorites. Upon other tries, I was assigned to places that were far from my apartment, that seemed like a hassle to get to on such a busy evening. But hey! At least the choice is no longer in your hands. If you have the best dinner of your life and get lucky after, thank Mr. Matchmaker. And if the dinner’s a disaster, you can blame the robot - it won’t mind.Plus, at the end of the day, what really matters is the company you keep. So even if the meal isn’t right up your alley, hopefully, the person you share it with will be. And that’s definitely something worth celebrating.

4 things I learned about life in the workplace in China

4 things I learned about life in the workplace in China 4 things I learned about life in the workplace in China I moved to China in 2004 to work as an English and business teacher at a university in Tianjin, a coastal city near Beijing.I’d worked in education back in the U.S., first as a peer tutor in college and then as a research assistant in university. Compared to those jobs, however, work in Chinese education was much less formalized.Classes are often arranged in an ad-hoc fashion. One time I was asked to design a course for international trade majors, so I created a class on comparative economics almost overnight. My impression was that many Chinese-taught classes and even whole majors were sometimes thrown together the same way.I soon learned that Chinese people have a word for this behavior: chabuduo, which basically means “good enough.” In chabuduo, the focus is less on process and rules and more on the result. At times it works wonders. Other times it fails spectacularly. Here are some other things I learned about life in the workplace in China. There’s a culture of overworkCom panies often expect a lot from their workers. There is a “Confucian work ethic,” which is often compared to its Protestant counterpart. One aspect of that work ethic is what Chinese call  chi  ku  (literally “eating bitterness”), the act of persisting through hardship.  Chi  ku  is a valued way to earn respect - and possibly a promotion.Overtime work is one of most common forms of  chi  ku.  Many  employees work overtime for more take-home pay or for more promotion opportunities. But sometimes it can be too much for young Chinese workers. After  a spate of suicides  by Foxconn workers in Shenzhen’s “iPhone City” in 2010, many blamed the company’s overtime policy.Yet when the company imposed overtime limits,  many Foxconn workers were unhappy  that the limits could affect their income.Work efficiency and the social pressure to earn money quickly can also sometimes mean  sacrificing health and safety - another variation on  chi  ku.For instance, thousands of miners ca ught up in China’s gold rush contracted silicosis, a preventable but ultimately fatal lung disease. The mines did not protect the workers. In other cases, however, workers may not protect themselves. One friend who worked in EHS at a major pharmaceutical company told me that he struggled to get Chinese workers into safety gear.I remember his complaints whenever I walk by a construction site and see workers welding without goggles or grinding metal without masks. There’s still an old boys’ clubThe  Mad Men  ethos exists in some traditional sectors of the Chinese economy including real estate and banking. Male employees are often expected to smoke or drink with customers, while female employees may be asked to entertain with a night of drinking and karaoke.Women are further disadvantaged by hiring and promotion practices that often discriminate against unmarried women and mothers alike. My single female students tell me they dread the question “Are you married yet?” in job inter views. If they say no, the employer may reject them because they may get married and take maternity leave. If they say yes, the next question is “how many children do you have?”Scholar Leta Hong Fincher has explored these themes in  her well-received book Leftover Women. The title of the book comes from a derogatory Chinese term for unmarried women professionals in their thirties. There’s a focus on innovationShenzhen is known as  China’s Silicon Valley. A city of 12 million opposite Hong Kong, its population comes from across China and around the world.I’ve known Jared Psigoda, co-founder of Shenzhen-based  Reality Squared Games, since my earliest days in China. In a recent conversation, Psigoda told me that China - and Shenzhen - are poised to dominate mobile computing the way the U.S. dominated the desktop. There are a variety of mobile platforms where China is taking the lead, especially WeChat,  China’s current popular messaging app.“In the age of the mobile inter net, China is developing a lot of amazing products that far outclass those developed in the West,” he said. The tech industry is also one area in China that is more welcoming to women employees, which  â€œkeeps the work environment more healthy,”  Psigoda  said.Psigoda said that half of the staff at Livestar, one of his startups, is female, a trend which mirrors  tech giants like Hangzhou-based Alibaba.Chinese tech companies and their VC backers  are not immune  to sexism, of course, but compared to traditional industries, Chinese women in tech are more often rewarded for “holding up half the sky.”There are many superstitionsSuperstitions play a conspicuous role in the Chinese workplace. Salespeople often decorate their desks with cabbage sculptures, since the word for cabbage,  bai cai, sounds like making money. Among office plants, money trees and ferns are prized as symbols of good fortune.Luck cuts both ways, however. My employer recently banned all sharp-leafed succulent s from our office because they remind people of  po  cai  - suffering financial losses.Companies often pay a  feng shui  expert to survey a site location for a building or to rearrange the  feng shui  of an office. Bad financial performance and even workplace accidents will be blamed on “bad”  feng shui.I recently had the chance to facilitate some onsite training at a regional airline, where a group of Buddhist monks in saffron robes offered mystical guidance in the company’s business office. It may seem odd to see so many expressions of religion and magical thinking in the workplace. But when you’re eating bitterness to get ahead, a little divine intervention can make the hard work easier to swallow.

How to Hire a Graphic Designer

How to Hire a Graphic Designer How to Hire a Graphic Designer “Unemployment rates are near an all-time low for graphic designers,” says Amy Mangan. As vice president and division director of The Creative Group in Atlanta, she’s been a firsthand witness to the rising need for design professionals. On the other side of the country, Karin Katselis, senior vice president for The Creative Group in San Francisco, has seen the same demand for graphic designers. “There aren’t enough of them to go around,” she says. Of course, this increased demand means many top candidates find jobs quickly and even field multiple offers. For candidates with hot skills, especially web and mobile experience, there’s no shortage of job opportunities - including with your rivals. “If you find the right graphic designer, you should act quickly and make a competitive offer,” Mangan advises. “Otherwise you risk losing the candidate and spending more time in the interview process.” So how do you hire a graphic designer in today's competitive environment? Define what you need While many designers have experience with a variety of projects - such as logos, page layouts and websites - many also specialize in one or another. Look carefully at your team’s needs. For example, if you need someone to create designs for a website or mobile app, try to find a designer with a background in user experience (UX). Likewise, if you’re looking for someone to create a logo, look for branding expertise. “Understanding the core of what you need this person to do on a day-to-day basis should drive the hiring process,” Mangan says. Versatility is also key, according to Eric DiChiara, vice president of The Creative Group in Boston. “You want designers who can take one design and roll it out to multiple pieces, from print and email to web and social,” he says. So be sure to include everything you need your new designer to do when writing the job description. If you put time and thought into this step and carefully consider the duties associated with the role, you increase your chances of finding the right candidate. Be as detailed as possible, but avoid too much jargon. To generate more interest in the position, provide additional information about your company culture and benefits. GET HIRING HELP! Seek the right skills Every designer should be well-versed in Adobe Creative Suite. These programs - primarily InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator - are the gold standard of design software. Of course, don’t get so caught up in technical skills that you forget soft skills. In a recent TCG survey, 23 percent of advertising and marketing executives polled believe soft skills carry more weight than hard skills. Fifty-eight percent give both equal weight. Because graphic designers work with people in other departments and are often charged with presenting ideas to clients, it’s crucial that they have excellent teamwork and communication skills. “Look for a variety of characteristics and traits, including creativity, of course, and also and the ability to think strategically, take constructive criticism and interact well with people in and outside of the company,” Katselis says. You also need to carefully review candidates’ portfolios. Look for examples that are similar to the projects you want your new graphic designer to take on. Candidates should showcase past work from planning to conclusion, citing processes used and outcomes achieved, such as increased sales. “A few good designs in a portfolio doesn’t necessarily make for a strong graphic designer,” Katselis says. “Is the work on brand for the client? Does it convey the right message for the audience? These are vital aspects to analyze because you’ll need them to get it right for you and your clients, too.” Finding similarities between your company’s work and a designer’s past jobs can also be key to gaining favor with your top candidates. “Look for previous experience that gives you - and them - reason to think they will thrive in your work environment, such as experience with similar projects and workflows,” Katselis says. SEARCH JOB CANDIDATES Ask the right questions When you’ve narrowed down your pool of applicants based on their resumes and portfolios, it’s time to start conducting interviews. This is your best opportunity to get to know them better and determine if they will fit in well at your company. To make the most out of the interview, use a variety of question types. And try to arrange for other members of your team to talk to the candidates. They can provide valuable feedback and may help you become aware of any red flags. Katselis suggests a few general questions for getting the candidate warmed up: What are your sources of inspiration for your design work? How do you take constructive criticism? Are you comfortable collaborating with others that might be at a higher level than you, such as an art director or creative director? What elements do you look for in a creative brief? Also consider including questions about their preferred work environment to gauge if they’ll fit in with your company’s culture. DiChiara recommends asking the following: Describe the team you worked on previously: Was it large or small? Were you the only designer or did you report to a senior designer or art director? Did you handle design from concept through production or did you hand your design files off to a production artist to finalize? Finally, go through the applicant’s portfolio with them. Ask specific questions about the types of design work and programs they’ve used to help you confirm their hard skills. And you should also ask the designer to explain their involvement in a particular project. Try these questions: How big was the team for the project? What was your role? What were some of the challenges you faced during the design process? What was the final result of the project? Offer the right compensation Last but not least, you must be willing to pay competitive rates to secure top talent. For graphic designer roles, the national midpoint starting salary is $55,000. Depending on skills, experience and location, some candidates may expect $83,250 or more. Keep in mind that candidates with extensive experience or those with in-demand skills, such as UX and app design, may demand higher earnings. The Creative Group 2019 Salary Guide can help you determine starting salaries based on all of the above.   Today’s candidates look at more than just salary. If your company offers additional benefits, such as flexible work arrangements, gym memberships or extra vacation time, advertise those to your top prospects. They may tip the scales in your favor. Put it into practice The goal of hiring is to find a graphic designer who will make valuable contributions and become an integral part of your organization for years to come. A Master Resume Helps Target Multiple Roles

She highlighted specific parts of her background, but then it was unclear exactly what type of job she wanted next. What positions was she targeting? This resume had organization but no focus. The best solution for Nancy was a master resume that worked. The new resume is a focused but flexible document that will serve different purposes. It has a different structure so that she can change it as needed. Every part of the resume is a place holder in an organized structure that visually separates the different types of information. Here are the five steps that took Nancy from confusion to focus:1. A “Headline” that immediately shouts out what she has to offer Nancy’s headline section, which defines what she can do and where she has worked, listed an obscure title, rarely recognized outside her industry: ”Productivity Consultant.”To avoid using such a diluted title, Nancy’s new master resume allows her to change the headline for every application.Text can be added, changed or deleted. But a specific, understandable headline is critical. It’s stronger than an “objective,” which is what you want, not who you are. If you don’t have anything here and just say “profile” or something generic, you are wasting an important opportunity to immediately say who you are.2. A table section for areas of expertise Another flexible part of her master resume is the areas of expertise section. Remember: A resume is written for three audiences - for a person to read it, a person to scan it and a computer to scan it.To meet all three needs, the areas of expertise section is set up as place holders. If “Event Planning” is not relevant for her next job (even though Nancy likes it), that field can be edited to include something else instead. This section gives a lot of flexibility in what is to be emphasized. Currently it is listed in alphabetical order, but it can be re-arranged to highlight different things.3. Use bold text to highlight specific wording The third flexible feature is the use of bold text. Based on the job Nancy is interested in, she can bold different sentences to draw the reader’s eye to specific accomplishments.4. Space for additional credentials.Nancy’s old resume did not indicate that she is an attorney with a master’s degree. By including that in the new resume, the reader immediately understands her education and credentials. These sections are configured so she can easily add to the information as she gets more credentials over the next few years.5. Keep track of changes you make to your master resumeStay up-to-date by having a process for how you rename the file. For exampl e you can have: Smith_Jane Master Resume Smith_Jane Bank of America Resume Nov 2009 Remember: The content determines the format and structure of a master resume â€" not the other way around.
